HVAC Equipment Test

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) are very often incorrectly oversized which causes the system to cycle on and off frequently, causing less comfort and inefficiency.  Exhaust ventilation is a particularly important health and safety concern in homes.  Proper mechanical ventilation is used to remove moisture, air pollution, or unwanted heat.

Replacing your existing furnace (heater) with a high-efficiency furnace can help save energy.  After air sealing and properly installing insulation, you can save money by reducing the size of your furnace.  The same holds true for the A/C system.  After air sealing and properly installing insulation, you can reduce the size of your A/C system and ducts to make your house more comfortable and energy efficient.

The components depicted in the picture to the left will be checked using state of the art diagnostic tools such as a combustion analyzer, duct blaster, and gas leak detector.  The coils and refrigerant lines will be checked to ensure their integrity, cleanliness and proper insulation.  Then, the system and air flow will be checked and calculated for proper sizing and rate of air exchange.

A/C systems consume about 30% of the electricity used in the US households, according to Southern California Edison.  Energy efficiency improvements in A/C systems can significantly lower operating costs of your home.

UV Air Purifier

APCO-in air handler-dual

Scientific studies have recently shown that UV light can kill 90% of microbes within 10 minutes and 99.9% after 24 hours.

The moisture and debris commonly found in HVAC systems provides an ideal breeding ground for mold, germs, fungi, and other harmful microbes.  Microbial contamination poses a major health risk to people who suffer from allergies, asthma, and other respiratory ailments, as well as to those who do not.   Numerous studies have confirmed that some diseases, including Legionnaire’s Disease, originate in, and are readily spread by, contaminated ventilation systems.  Airborne contaminants are drawn through the duct work of the central air conditioning system through return air registers.  According to ASHRAE, standard, throw-away fiberglass filters remove less than 7% of these particles, which means the rest settles in air ducts and also your lungs!  The leading medical authorities have now acknowledged poor and harmful indoor air quality as a major allergy and disease causing problem, which has prompted doctors and allergists to commonly prescribe furnace and air duct cleaning as a remedy.

The UV fresh air purifier can be installed in the ductwork of your central air system - one just above the air handler and the other mounted at the cooling coil.  This combination sterilizes microbial growth inside the air system, including mold, mildew, allergens, viruses and bacteria.  It is designed to help reduce airborne odors, toxic chemical vapors, germs and mold in your home.

This state of the art technology represents an entirely new type of air purifier.  The combination of germicidal UV light and activated carbon cells inside the air purifying unit make it uniquely effective at reducing volatile orgainic compounds VOCs in the air that you breath on a daily basis in your home, without producing any harmful ozone.  VOCs are  toxic chemical vapors found in your common household cleaning products underneath your kitchen sink, that cause odors and include toxic vapors such as formaldehyde and toluene.

If you question the need for air duct cleaning, take a look behind the return air grilles in the HVAC system of your home.  Many people have found that one glimpse into their air ducts provides all the evidence they need to initiate a through cleansing of their HVAC system.   Call today for a healthier home and a healthier you.

Heating and Cooling - Heat Pump

For climates with moderate heating and cooling needs, like here in California, heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to gas furnaces and air conditioners.  Like your refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer.  During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into your house to keep it warm and during the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your house into the warm outdoors, keeping your house nice and cool.  Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide up to 4 times the amount of energy they consume!

The beauty of this new technology is the high-efficiency outdoor coil which provides exceptional heat transfer and low air resistance for high-efficiency operation that can drastically lower your cooling bills.

Heat pumps come in single- or two- stage.  A two-stage unit is better than a single stage because it maintains precise temperatures while keeping energy costs and sound levels at a minimum.  The two stages of operation are:  high for hot summer days and low for milder days.  Since the low setting is adequate to meet household cooling demands 80% of the time, the two-stage unit runs more efficiently and produces more even temperatures, compared to conventional single-stage systems.  Two-stage heating and cooling cycles also translate to quieter, more efficient operation and enhanced humidity control.

You can have a ducted split system or a ductless mini split system.  Each outdoor condenser runs to one, two or multiple fans installed in various rooms without ducts.  The refrigerant lines are all that need to be installed in the wall where the fan will be located instead of all the ducts you would normally have to install.  (See picture to the right - no ducts)!

Powering your heating and cooling by the sun has never been easier - now that there is a green alternative to burning fossil fuel.  You no longer have to deal with gas leaks and carbon monoxide leaking into your home.

We can help you Install a solar PV system to power all of your appliances and loads, including your new heat pump.  This will reduce the amount of electricity you need from the utility company - putting you back in control of your utility bills and hedging against the increasing cost of electricity, gas and oil.

This energy-saving system harnesses solar energy and uses it first (before using electricity from the utility company) to power your new heat pump, and anything else in your home that needs electricity.  With a 25 year warranted solar PV system, you can provide your home with clean, reliable and healthy energy far off into the future, without the worry of rising electric bills from the utility.

The heat pump has multiple indoor fans where you can have different temperatures in different parts of hte house, saving energy in parts of the house that aren't being used and don't need heating or cooling!

Multiple Zone Cooling and Heating

As you can see in the image to the left, you can have multiple indoor fans installed in different rooms to really save on energy.

You only need to turn on the fan in the room that you need heated or cooled.  That way, instead of cooling the entire house (which costs a lot) you now have the option to only cool the area you need and save on your electric bill!
