Grid Tied with Energy Storage - Peak Shift, Load Shave, Backup
A residential, "Grid Tied" PV solar system enables a homeowner to generate power during the day when they are not at home and credit or "bank" the excess energy to the utility grid, since they are "tied" to or connected to the utility grid. In the evening, the homeowner then draws electricty back from the grid (as they normally would) to power their homes. This basic concept is called net-metering. The solar Panels (made up of photovolatic cells) on the roof (or the ground if ground mounted) convert the sunlight into electricity. The cells are grouped together to create solar panels. A series of panels can be linked together, as seen above, to generate enough power to reduce or eliminate your electricity bill entirely - cut the utility umbilical cord.
Utility-interactive or grid tied systems make a bidirectional interface with the utility at the distribution panel or electric service entrance. When a PV system does not produce enough power to meet the system loads (at night), additional power is imported from the utility. If there is an excess of PV power (in the day), the excess power is fed back (exported) to the grid - whereby the homeowner receives a "credit" from the utility company.
A grid tied with energy storage system (bimodal) is a PV system that can operate in either utility-interactive or stand-alone (off grid) mode, and uses lithium ion technology to store energy. If you have an existing solar PV system, we can add an energy storage system to it - just like we did in 2014, to an existing grid tied solar system designed in 2009. Now, the homeowner can power his house when the grid goes down. He and his family can now use the air conditioner, microwave, oven, washer and dryer, all the lights, security system, 2 refrigerators, internet, phone, power in each room, outdoor lighting, 3 big screen tv's and more . . . . for over 15 years without the grid!
Bimodal systems operate in a manner and have components similar to those found in UPS's. Under normal conditions, bimodal systems operate in interactive mode, serving the on-site loads or sending excess power to the grid, while keeping the energy storage system fully charged. However, if there is a "black out" as in the first picture to the right or the grid becomes de-energized, control circuitry disconnects from the utility grid and operates the inverter to supply AC power from the energy storage system, supplying your house with the needed electricity during the night. In the day, the solar panels power the house and recharge the energy storage system, and will continue to do so for at least 15 years. If the system must be taken off-line for service and maintenance, a manual transfer switch or bypass circuit can isolate the energy storage bank and inverter from the remainder of the system and directly connect the loads to the utility grid.
In the event of a blackout, your house could run on the solar panels and its energy storage system to supply all the electricity it needs in the protected loads panel, indefinitely for over 15 years, without the grid!

The NABCEP PV installer certification is a voluntary certification that provides a set of national standards by which PV installers with skills and experience can distinguish themselves from their competition. Certification provides a measure of protection to the public by giving them a credential for judging the competency of practitioners. It is not intended to prevent qualified individuals from installing PV systems nor to replace state licensure requirements.
The target candidate for NABCEP certification is the person responsible for the system installation (e.g., contractor, foreman, supervisor, or journeyman).
The NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification has been developed in accordance with the the certification field’s best practices. NABCEP is a member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (I.C.E.) and has endeavored to follow the requirements of ISO/IEC Standard 17024: General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification Systems of Persons.
NABCEP’s PV Installer Certification is North America’s only renewable energy personnel certification that has been ANSI accredited to the internationally recognized ISO/IEC 17024 standard.
